Our present church building is the third meeting house of the First Parish Church of Bridgewater. The sanctuary was built in 1845, with the parish hall added in 1880. Its location on the edge of the Bridgewater State College campus, one block from the town common, puts it near the center of town and college activities..
The Greek revival building is in excellent condition following a recent restoration effort. A fire in the sanctuary in 1990 was followed by repair work that uncovered trompe l’oeil wall paintings that had been hidden by several layers of paint. The restoration included interior and exterior painting, refinishing of pulpit and pews, refurbishing of lawn and plantings, and new signs.
The minister’s office was built in the early 1970s and the kitchen and parish hall were modernized at that time. The parish hall is home to our Sunday school, and many other activities.
Our building is a beautiful, sturdy home for our parish life, a place for worship, meetings, dinners, and performances. The restoration process has been an ongoing project of beautification that has energized the congregation and given the community a historical facility with great potential for the future.
